Mitchell Public Library Board of Trustees


The Mitchell Public Library Board of Trustees meet every second Tuesday of the month at 5:00pm. To view the minutes of the meetings select the year and then the date of the meeting. MEETING OF THE MITCHELL PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES, TUESDAY, MARCH 13TH, 2007 5:00 P.M.

The Mitchell Public Library Board of Trustees met on Tuesday, March 13th, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. in the community room at the Mitchell Public Library.  Board president Taylor called the meeting to order.

Members present: Blumer, Claggett, Lapka, Margheim, Molumby, Taylor.
Members absent: none.

Barb Lapka was welcomed as the new trustee.  She replaces Pat Koupal.

Minutes.  The minutes of the February 13th, 2007 board meeting were approved as read.

Director’s report.  The Director’s report was approved as given.  In addition to report, the following items were mentioned: The State Library is requesting statistics on how many interlibrary loan items the Mitchell Public Library sent out for January and February 2007 and how many had to be mailed and what those costs were.  The State Library Board is possibly looking for funding to help the larger public libraries with the cost of postage since the State Library no longer loans out its collection. 

Plans are being finalized for the Summer Reading Program.  This years’ theme is, “Get a Clue at the Library.”  Some of the special programs scheduled for this summer are; Mister Twister, and, Jim Oliver—puppeteer and Children’s Librarian from Siouxland Libraries.  One more program will be scheduled.

The City of Mitchell purchased a snow blower for next year.  The cost was divided between 3 city departments, including the Library.

New business.  Mitchell Telecom was contacted by the Library as a potential internet provider.  Mitchell Telecom has a franchise agreement with the City of Mitchell.  3 basic packages were discussed. The free basic service was 10 MB download, 512 kb upload speed. The next package was 10MB download, 768 KB upload speed for $94.85 per month.  The final package was 10MB download, 1500 KB upload speed for $190.95 per month.  Web hosting fees ranged from 10MB for $9.95 per month to 300 MB for $38.95 per month.  A motion was made and approved to switch to Mitchell Telecom and take the $94.85 package.  M/S/P Molumby, Margheim.  The switch to Mitchell Telecom should be made in about 2 weeks. 

The Director informed the Trustees about Teen Tech Week.  This is an avenue to introduce teens and the general public to one of the new databases, Learning Express Library.  This database has tests for careers such as postal clerk, police officer, as well as skills improvement tests in math, English, etc. for students in grade 3 and up.  A contest is being set up for people in the local community to take a test in their field. The person with the highest score will be awarded a traveling trophy. 

The publishing of the Library Board meeting minutes were discussed.  According to state statute, public libraries need only to publish minutes of the board meeting only if there is a change in policy.  The minutes will be listed on the website and available on request at the library.  A motion was made, seconded and approved to change the policy to publish only those minutes that reflect a policy change in the local newspaper.  M/S/P Margheim, Claggett.
