YNK – You Never Know Your Library
Book Safe
Materials Needed:
Old Book
Utility Knife or Blade with adult supervision
Pencil or Pen to mark the pattern
Scissors
Thick card board or cutting board
Ruler
Glue to attach pages and liner is needed
Small container size for inside of safe - optional
Something to put in the safe
Decorations – Markers, Stickers
Instructions:
Locate an old book that can have the center cut out. If the safe is going to have a liner, trace it to make a pattern in the middle of the book. If no liner is used draw a pattern on a page in the middle of a book. Open the book to the page with the pattern and lay the cardboard or cutting board under it and run the blade along the pattern to cut it out. Determine how deep the safe should be and place several pages that are under the pattern page and put the cardboard or cutting board until them. Trace the pattern again with the blade and if some of the paper catches use the scissors to trim it off. Continue cutting pages until the safe is the shape needed. Be careful that the binding of the book does not break while the pages are being cut. If a liner is used glue it in and if the pages need to be enforced glue some of them together. Let the glue dry and decorate the book if needed.
